One of the most daunting challenges facing any architect is that of the unusual lot. How about a lot that is only 10 feet at its narrow end? Where four cars need to park? Not a problem!
All we need is a little creative problem-solving to get around all the code restrictions. Here we have proposed a structure that will add a second dwelling unit to an existing single family dwelling in Venice CA. In order to get around the 4-car requirement for two dwellings in this neighborhood, we needed to elevate the structure above the cars. This means that effectively the living space starts on the second floor and the cars have to park around the building structure supporting the second floor. All this leaves is a pie-shaped building with a blunted triangular living space above.
Not only do we manage to solve the problem, but we get to create a very cool space at the same time.
